Worm And Worm Gears
Typically, worm and worm gears are used to gain a large reduction of speed between driving and driven shafts in a relatively compact area. Worm gears are often called worm wheels .
CMG can produce worm gears up to 16.0” in diameter. They are typically made from CDA954 Aluminum Bronze or 660 Bronze. We can make multiple start worms.
Worms can have single or multiple starts and have a right or left hand lead.CMG can manufacture from one up to six start worms, right or left hand. The maximum diameter would be 4.0” with a maximum length of 6.0”. CMG typically makes worms from 8620 material, rough machines the worm, carburizes and hardens the worm, and then finish grinds the worm.
CMG can reverse engineer a worm and worm gear set, but both items are needed in order to do so.The tooth geometry for the worm gear comes from the worm and typically it is the least damaged in a reverse engineering situation. It is always helpful to have any available information but the one critical piece of information is the center distance between the two gears. This should be able to be derived from examination of the gearbox itself. CMG has many worm hobs in its inventory and can typically avoid tool up charges, however when trying to replace a worn gear set, this can often times be an issue.
